Entrevista a Sarah Bäckman

1. Where were you born?
Southwards the capital of Sweden, Stockholm

2.Growing up, where you involved in the armwrestling world?
No, I did always hate sport and was fat as a kid, I had no interest of any sport but I've always been stronger than others when we armwrestled for fun.

3.How old where you when you discovered your interest in armwrestling?
I started armwrestling 3 weeks before I turned to 15 years old, I started November 2006. I won an armwrestling competition in my school two years in a row and my recretation leader thought I would start armwrestling on competition level. I didn't know it was a sport, and when I got to know more about it, I was obsessed and on fire!

4.How did your parents feel about the fact that you wanted to start competing?
My dad didn't care so much, and still don't do. My mom have always supported me and thought it was good I finally had a hobby in my life, since I didn't have that before.

5.What was the first thing you thought about when you became the world champion?
That was a long process for me, the time before, during and after the World Championships in Kelowna, Canada 2008. I trained harder than ever before and focused a lot, I didn't care about anything but the competition, I felt a lot of pressure and almost had a feeling of I "had to win" because of others who wanted me to win. I wanted too, ofcourse, but people must learn how to give support in the right way instead of giving negative support. Now I know better, and fight for myself and just myself! Armwrestling is a very invidual sport and your victory is YOUR victory, no one else's. Ofcourse you have your team mates but it's still up to how it goes at the table.

6.Which of your competitors do you consider the best on a world level?
In Sweden is it Heidi Andersson and Malin Kleinsmith as I know is hard to beat, but that doesn't make me scared, it's just makes me fight even harder. World wide is it ukrainian and russian armwrestlers as is the best on a world level.

7. Let’s talk about your workout. What exercises do you do and what kind of machines do you use? (if it’s okay to ask)
To become a better armwrestler is table time (armwrestling) the 1st priority to become better, ofcourse. You get a great pressure and techniqe from armwrestling training (if you do it right), but you also need to build power and strenght with weights. Focus is on forearms, wrists, hands, fingers, back and chest in my opinion. Different types of wrist curls is perfect...

8. Are there any workout secrets you can share? (just for me, I promise nobody else will know)
My biggest workout is my mind! Focus is the most important for me! I can come to a competition and feel weak, but if I have the right focus can I reach very far just because of that. Otherwise is it armwrestling as I see as my best workout.

9.How many days a week do you train? And with what level of intensity?
I don't train often, but when I do it, I do it hard! Armwrestling 2-3 times / week, and gym (with focus on wrists/forearms/back) maybe 1 time per week, everything is about how I feel and how big my motivation is...

10.Are you on any kind of special diet?
I hate diet, you can never get any stronger if you are on a diet. I prefer to eat how much and whenever I want, that makes me happy! I love food more than anything in this world! As much as armwrestling, ha ha...

11.And finally, what message would you send to all those Spanish girls out there who think that armwrestling is a man’s sport?
If you have a goal - do not let anything come in your way! Keep on fighting, don't let anyone stop you. Listen to yourself and LIVE YOUR LIFE AS YOU WANT TO LIVE...
And, armwrestling isn't a man's sport, it's for EVERYBODY who understand what armwrestling is, the most important is to enjoy it while doing it (as with everything else in this world)!
